Editorial

What a week, no electricity most of the time here in the Western Cape, fortunately I was able to get away to Witbank where of course they make our electricity and they had loads of the stuff! At one talk I met someone from our electricity supply company who said they were taking a few power stations out of mothballs to help with the load.

Needless to say a week of disrupted power has resulted in delays in emails and newsletters, so my apologies but it really was out of my control.

And speaking of control, have been receiving some wonderful feedback from people who have read our book, “Take Control”. One family are reading the book to their family to help instill the values and understanding of how life affects our health.

Have had awesome feedback from those who managed to here Udo Erasmus in Johannesburg, the man is a genius and has a way of conveying scientific info to the layman with passion and humour.

All those students doing The Natural Health & Nutrition Course and the Natural Health Consulting course absolutely must read “Fats that heal and fats that kill” Anyone can order the book from either www.amazon.com or from his website www.udoerasmus.com or from www.sanaka.co.za here in South Africa. He has also written a 2nd book more for the layman titled “Choosing the right fats”

I am speaking on Monday evening the 27th February at the River Club Golf Course in Observatory Cape Town on “Detoxification – Fact or fiction” Time 1900hrs if you want a seat.

Interesting stuff

Summary of Udo Erasmus’s Talk in Cape Town

I found Udo to be down to earth, incredibly funny, very refreshing and able to translate highly scientific information into layman’s language. He makes health totally clear and simple. If you ever have the opportunity to hear him speak, rush there.

Who is Udo Erasmus?

Received a B.Sc Honours degree in Zoology, majoring in psychology from UNI British Columbia (Canada), 2 Years post grad study in genetics and Biochemistry, MA in Counseling Psychology

His book “Fats that heal and Fats that Kill” earned him a Ph.D. in Nutrition.

His life changed drastically in 1980 when he was poisoned by pesticides and conventional medicine was unable to help him. It was through nutrition that he regained and improved his health.

Some points covered

Essential Fatty acids (Omega 3 or ALA) and Omega 6 (or LA) are essential for health. They are involved in virtually every chemical reaction in the body and you cannot fix a deficiency of these EFAs by taking medication or having an operation, you need to eat the right fats.

The best source of these fats is from organically grown seeds like flax, sesame & sunflower seeds also dark green leafy vegetables.

MCTs (Medium chain Triglycerides are needed in the diet to help with the absorption of EFAs. The best source for us is found in tropical oils especially cold pressed coconut oil. These MCTs are anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial.

1. Energy and stamina

EFAs increase energy production by helping the body obtain more oxygen. This increases metabolic rate, overall energy, stamina and is therefore beneficial to everyone especially athletes, the overweight, middle-aged and the elderly.

When EFAs are balanced athletic performance in both strength and endurance sports increase as does recovery.

EFAs actually help our bodies burn fuel more efficiently so should not be counted as fat calories/kilojoules. They are vital to the formation of cell membranes and converted to hormone-like prostaglandins.

EFAs help our kidneys dump excess water held in tissues, this usually leads to weight loss.

EFAs help decrease cravings and appetite

EFAs lift depression and elevate mood

EFAs make blood less sticky decreasing the likelihood of blood clots protecting us from heart attacks, strokes, lowering blood pressure, decreasing inflammation and removing excess water

EFAs protect our genetic material helping our immune system function more efficiently.

EFA’s are essential to soft skin, strong hair and nails

(In fact Udo’s own skin looks unbelievably soft and young up close and personal- OK so I chatted to him face to face. One of the things I have always believed is that when people are giving advice on lifestyle issues – no matter how qualified they may be- they need to actually look healthy and UDO does)

EFAs help prevent leaky gut syndrome and food allergies

EFAs are essential for sperm production and fertility

Half the weight of your brain is essential fatty acids

EFAs help with any learning problems from dyslexia, to attention deficit disorders, hyperactivity etc.

Corrects criminal behaviour

Improves mental functioning generally and in mental illness

EFAs improve the body’s ability to use calcium by increasing calcium absorption, reducing calcium excretion, deposition of bone and matrix formation

Udo recommends that you take 1 Tablespoon (15ml) of flax oil or blend for every 25kg of body weight on a daily basis. He suggest a blend so that you don’t have to work out how much Omega 3 & 6 you take in, it is already worked out for you.

Udo basically confirmed what I have been saying about fats for the last 15 years going back to The Natural Way and confirmed the bad fats to be from processed foods like margarine, ice-cream, coffee and tea creamer and from fried foods

Bad fats

Increase the risk factor for cardiovascular disease

Decrease testosterone, increase abnormal sperm and interfere with pregnancy

Interfere with blood insulin function

Result in lower birth weight in babies

Interfere with liver function

Result in making the membranes of cells more permeable

Increase blood clotting

Interfere with EFA function

We find these bad fats in breads, sweets (candies) cookies, granola bars, muesli, biscuits, cake mixes, peanuts and peanut butter (heated process)

Udo’s food pyramid is very interesting and he has as the foundation GREEN Vegetables, confirming that they are essential to our diet.  (www.udoerasmus.com)

Although Udo has his own range of oils he has a completely NON commercial approach, and in fact if someone had not asked most people would have been unaware of his own brand.

Udo’s oils are available in South Africa. I have found Millbrook’s Superior blend to be an exceptional oil which I use daily combined with Barleylife (the dried juice from sprouted barely leaves) this provides the nutrients needed for the full utilization of the Omega 3 and EFAs. If you prefer taking EFAs is capsule form the only one I can recommend with confidence is Aimega from Aim (the same company that supplies Barleylife- email info@mary-anns.com for more detail) or contact any of the Natural Health Consultants on www.mary-anns.com

Thought for the week

I have found the book of Philippians to be especially encouraging this week. Sometimes I get caught up in the woes of the world and see so many things that are wrong and unjust that I start to get quite negative about life in general. At this time I find chapter 4 particularly encouraging. The following verses really encouraged me

For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honourable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is kind and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things” Philippians 4:8
