17 of 2006: IBS

Had some wonderful feedback from everyone about the detox, so write and let me hear about your success or perceived failures. I say perceived, because as much as you may not have completed the program, the fact that you managed to do something makes you successful in taking steps to take responsibility for your health.

I had one email from someone who is upset about me promoting Barley Life as part of the detox   program.

Firstly the Aim Company does not pay me to promote any of their products. I have just found their products to be incredibly helpful in attaining and maintaining high levels of health. I have always maintained that you should not have to be wealthy to be healthy and believe me you do not have to be wealthy to use Barley Life or any of the other products from Aim that I personally recommend. However the beauty of these products is that if you do not want to order any of the products directly from Aim at the wholesale price you can actually grow your own. All their products are made from plants which can be grown in most gardens. Barley Life is just juice extracted from the barley leaf then spray dried at room temperature to maintain all the nutrients. Just Carrots is dried carrot juice as is Redibeets, dried beet juice. You can grow your own herbs for Herbal Fibre Blend. I do not have the time or inclination to do so and I just find it incredibly convenient and easy to use the dried versions and have found the Aim Company to have the utmost integrity when it comes to their products.

If you order via me I will receive a rebate from the company, as they are grateful for any marketing they receive from the users. Anyone can receive a rebate from them for

doing the same. If you choose to order via someone else they will receive a rebate.

Does this make me biased toward the product? No, I only promote the products I use and I recommend many products that I do not receive a rebate for, yet continue to do so because those are the products I use and I am continually asked what I use.

I have on the other hand been approached by various companies to promote their products for large sums of money and I have turned them down, because I don’t use them, and don’t believe they will benefit other people. There is no amount of money that will induce me to promote something I cannot or do not believe in.

So you don’t have to use any of the products I recommend, and healthy eating and exercise alone will make a huge difference to anyone, it may just take longer or require more diligence.

This week I have included some information on Irritable Bowel syndrome from Harold Bloch the specialist physician and gastroenterologist in the Western Cape.

Interesting stuff & Good reports

Dear Mary-Ann

I am quite sure that you already know that Harold Bloch, my husband, is not only a Specialist Physician, but that he is also a Gastroenterologist with his medical practice in Somerset West.

I found some notes that he had put together for a talk that he was doing for a group of Medical Practitioners and thought that I might share same with you!

The information on the AIM products at the foot of the article are notes made by me -- I thought it would be interesting to read the data sheets in our AIM FILES on same and attach them to his information!

As you are already an AIM member, I thought it would make interesting reading?

Just wondered how many of your friends and family might find the information interesting too? So many people that I know seem to have disorders of their bowels!

Would love to have your comments?

Love and a hug

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME – By Harold Bloch

The “Irritable Bowel” [IBS] is probably the most common diagnosis made by Gastroenterologists in the Western World today. In one large study 5O% to 7O% of all the patients in the clinic were thought to be suffering from this condition! These figures reflect not only the prevalence of the condition, but also the desire of the patient to present to the doctor, and in turn the desire for the doctor to refer the patient to a specialist.  A series from the UK indicates that 14% of the population has symptoms

suggestive of IBS.

AGE

The symptoms may occur at any age, although the majority of patients are between 2O and 6O years of age.

 SEX INCIDENCE

The female to male ratio is said to be 9:1, but probably more males have the condition but do not report it to their doctors.

 SYMPTOMS

The cardinal symptom is disturbance of bowel habit – with or without pain, along with a constellation of symptoms, some of which may achieve prominence in an individual.

It has been customary to divide the syndrome into 3 types:

         Spastic colon group – 65% of these patients complain of pain

         Painless diarrhea group – 25% of these patients often do not have much pain

         Mixed Group – 1O%

The pain of IBS is variable in almost all respects --- from mild discomfort to an intensity rivaling that of child birth. The pain may occur anywhere in the abdomen or may be localized to any one spot. The pain might be ‘cramp’ like, stabbing or a dull ache. Symptoms are continuous or intermittent --- many patients reporting periods where they are pain free or suffer only mild symptoms together with episodes of acute flare-ups.

CAUSE OF IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

The precise cause of IBS is unknown --- however, certain factors may be important!

         Infective Factors:  These often appear to precipitate a bout of prolonged symptoms

         Psychogenic Factors: Stress [probably emotional stress] is an aggravating factor rather than the actual cause of this syndrome. In general patients with IBS are more anxious and depressed than a ‘control’ group of patients. It is however not clear why some patients with a personality disorder develop bowel symptoms and why others do not. It may be a genetic predisposition to develop this disordered bowel activity.

         Food Intolerance: This may give rise to symptoms which are similar, if not identical to those if an irritable bowel. The most common is Lactose Intolerance which is due to lack of enzyme which breaks down lactose --- the sugar which is found in milk and other foods. This condition is very common and results in bloating, flatulence, cramps and often diarrhea.

         Other Causes: Surgery, a fiber deficient diet and laxative abuse.

Note: As in all conditions, a long list of other disorders must be excluded in order to make a positive diagnosis. Your doctor will possibly be able to make a diagnosis from your history although he will probably request some tests. In some patients the diagnosis will only be reached after extensive testing. There is NO cure for this condition and therefore treatment is for symptom relief only. In most patients the condition will run a fluctuating course which requires treatment at intervals.

MANAGEMENT:

Management is non-specific; however, the usual first line of treatment is a high roughage diet. In addition there are a number of natural products which might complement a diet, high in fiber:

HERBAL FIBERBLEND: Getting adequate fiber and cleaning or detoxifying are two, often overlooked elements of maintaining, not only digestive health, but also whole body health. Herbal Fiberblend provides the fiber that is often lacking in our diets. This unique natural product provides the perfect way to maintain digestive health, keeps the digestive system clean, and promotes whole body health.

         Benefits: Helps maintain digestive health, whole body health and removes toxins from the body. Maintains regular bowel movements providing more thorough evacuation of waste. Water soluble fiber helps maintain healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

PREPZYMES: One way to help maintain digestive health is to be sure you get enough good food and digestive enzymes. Enzymes are an important part of the “living-well” equation. Enzymes are the ‘sparks’ that start the essential chemical reactions for digesting food, for stimulating the brain, for providing cellular energy and for repairing all tissues, organs and cells.  If we do not replenish our supply of enzymes, we run the risk of ill health. This includes constipation, stomach bloat, poor digestion, flatulence,

fatigue, weight gain and weight loss, headaches and more. Prepzymes combines cultured enzymes with papaya and alpine wild garlic. This breakthrough product has been especially formulated to replace naturally occurring enzymes lost during food processing, food preparation and cooking.  They meet the digestive needs to help you digest the foods you eat.

         Benefits: Supplements the body’s enzyme supply, aids digestion, and improves assimilation and utilization of food thereby increasing energy. Using digestive enzymes ensures that your foods are more completely digested, helping to eliminate potential problems.

FLORAFOOD: Bacteria thrive in our bodies. There are more bacteria in the digestive system than there are cells in the body. Bacteria have both friendly and unfriendly populations. When unfriendly bacteria dominate, the effects include diarrhea, flatulence, bloating, constipation, mal-absorption of nutrients as well a pain. Friendly bacteria aid in the digestive process, clean the intestinal tract, promote regular bowel movements, create lactic acid, produce anti-fungal that prevent the growth of harmful bacteria, contribute to the destruction of moulds, viruses and parasites and protect us from environmental toxins such as pesticides and pollutants.

         Benefits: maintains digestive health, supplements friendly bacteria, enhances the immune system, restores a balanced intestinal flora, alleviates flatulence, and maintains healthy cholesterol levels

PARA 9O: A digestive concern we should all be aware of is the increasing prevalence of parasites. We need to understand the effect parasites may have on the digestive system and what we can do to maintain a parasite-free system. Parasites enter the body in one of four ways: through food and water intake; through a transmitting agent such as a mosquito; through sexual contact; through the nose and skin. They are also carried by household pets and livestock. Parasitic infection can be manifested by any number of signs; constipation and diarrhea, flatulence and bloating, IBS, muscle aches and pains, anemia, allergies, skin conditions, nervousness, sleep disturbances, teeth grinding and chronic fatigue.

         Benefits: Intestinal cleaner and anti-parasitic, helps maintain digestive health

CRANVERRY:  Cranberry has a long history of use in ‘folk’ medicine. Early European, Native American and Asian cultures used it for treating wounds, swollen glands and for the prevention of scurvy as well as the prevention and treatment of bladder and kidney stones.

         Benefits: maintains digestive health and cholesterol levels, supplements healthy bacteria, enhances the immune system, promotes healthy, friendly beneficial flora, and alleviates flatulence.

HERBAL RELEASE: The immune system is the army that protects us from invaders. It extends throughout the body and protects us from bacteria and viruses. When the immune system is healthy, we are healthy. Important to the immune system is the lymphatic system. Herbal Release helps support this vital part of the immune system. The lymphatic system plays the central role in building immune release. It enables the body to rid itself of bacteria and viruses, filters foreign substances from the blood, removes toxins and waste products that our cells produce as part of their metabolism.

         Helps to maintain immune health, a healthy lymphatic system and functions as an anti-parasitic. It is also great for detoxification.

COMPOSURE: The nervous system controls communication in the body. Its leader is the brain which allows us to think, decide, control our actions and coordinates the ability to move, touch, smell, hear and see!  Everyone experiences “stress” --- but what triggers it is different in everyone.  Whatever the cause, stress is a factor in digestive disease.

COMPOSURE is a blend of the extracts of eight herbs that work together to help in the time of stress, and when combined with a healthy diet, will assist with a healthy sense of well-being.

         Benefits: Helps maintain neuro health and increases relaxation assisting with the control of stress related symptoms.

I am quite sure that when I study the information set out in the  the AIM ALTERNATIVE, SUCCESS YOUR WAY data file there will probably find more products that could be added to this already very impressive list! Do you have any thoughts on same? --- or additions to the above mentioned products?

Looking forward to hearing from you

My (Mary-Ann’s) comments

I have found in 100% of the cases I have every dealt with that keeping your meals to only one concentrated food per meal plays a huge factor. I do not have the space to cover it here but chapter 3 in The Natural Way, my first book, covers this in much detail and more in Perfect Weight.

Keeping your meals simple helps eliminate the production of gas (a common problem in this condition) and helps to digest your food more efficiently.

Then I have found eliminating wheat especially bread and possibly gluten (the protein found in the grain (not the grass) of wheat, rye, oats and barley, makes a huge difference.

Dairy (including milk, yoghurt and cheese) as mentioned above is definitely a factor and stress. If you feel you need some tools to help you manage stress more efficiently (remember that only dead people have no stress) then our book “Take Control” will help you do just that.

Exercise plays a major role in digestion as it regulates at least 18 different hormones, many which relate directly or indirectly to digestive function. A brisk 20 minute walk before your main meal will help you dramatically.

The products mentioned above can also be of tremendous help and you can obtain them from Jeanne on the contact details or from any of the Natural Health Consultants on our website who can also help you with your eating habits and lifestyle issues.

 Thought for the week
