OK so the wildfires are gone and winter is slowly creeping in here in the Northern Hemisphere while I miss summer back in South Africa (besides missing my family). Why do I do this? Travelling thousands of miles around the world speaking to strange people about their diets? I believe more than anything that I am called to do this with my family and when I feel overwhelmed (yes I can) , God reminds me that this is not about me.

Just a few weeks ago I was longing for my family and as I climbed into the car I heard a young woman phone into a radio station desperate for help. It was an “Ask the pastor” session on KWave here in Orange County in California and she was saying no matter how much she read the Bible and prayed and went for counseling she could not get rid of her Bi-polar (also known as manic depression), to the extent that she was now unable to work.

Well they made some vague comment about finding some good friends to support her and hobbies or things to do. I too suffered from this and as much as I firmly believe that knowing God and walking with Him daily is the most important thing in my life, I was unable to have a decent relationship with Him because I felt like I was losing my mind. Only when I asked Him for wisdom and changed my diet did my depression disappear and has been gone for well over 20 years. This is documented in my book “Take Control”

I realized in the car that I need to keep telling people this message of 'natural health' until I die, because so many people out there are confused and desperate for answers.

I can however not do this on my own, so to all those natural health consultants and enthusiastic people who follow a natural lifestyle, "thank you" for your help but we need more of you. Just share your testimony; maybe do our Natural Health and Nutrition Course if you want to do this on a more full time basis and need some hard facts at hand.

Some feedback from last week’s newsletter I found interesting

I just had to comment on the tonsil removing letter on this mail.  Please listen to Mary-Ann’s advice.  My son’s tonsils were removed at the age of 13 months, due to several infections up till that stage, and although we have asked questions, it was always a very reassuring answer that followed.  The end:-  my son ended up with asthma, rheumatoid fever – which is immune deprived sicknesses, and on the age of 15yrs, is now drinking more medicine with some severe complications, that what we have suffered before the removal.  If I just have knew then what milk is doing, as I knew now, also after my own indigestive problems, that would have been the first thing that I would have done, and spared him all the troubles he has now.  In the end it seems to be more convenient for the NOW, it is just a illusion that sickness and infections will stop or be less.  I have stopped using dairy now for 3 weeks after a doctor ordered me so, this was strange, cause they normally disagree with any natural ways, and I am glad to say that symptomatic alone, I feel much better and my digestive problems a huge lot better.  I need to learn more however, about what food to use to replace all needed, but I am sure going to adapt by it!

Avoiding Cancer: Your Nine-Point Action Plan

By Adam Voiland

Posted November 1, 2007

The gist of a long-awaited analysis of cancer-prevention studies out this week: Be slim, very slim. The report by the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research states in no uncertain terms that the more pounds you're packing, the greater your risk of developing a number of cancers, everywhere from the colon and the breast to the kidney and the pancreas. And it gave detailed advice on avoidance. Here's what you can do:

1. Be as lean as possible. Normal is OK, but you actually want to be on the lower end of the normal range of the body mass index, a number that relates your weight to your height. Aim for a BMI of 21 to 23—for a man 6-feet tall, that's about 162 pounds.

To help you reach this read “Perfect Weight – The Natural Way” or “The Natural Way” or “Perfect Health” All 3 books give you easy basic steps to help you attain permanent weight loss and exceptional health. Also read the success stories on www.mary-anns.com of how others have lost weight and gained health.

2. Be active. There's no getting around it. You need 60 minutes or more of moderate exercise, or 30 minutes of vigorous physical exercise, every day.

“Perfect Weight – The Natural Way” or “The Natural Way” or “Perfect Health” and “Take Control” and “Healthy Kids” all cover the benfits of exercises and how to implement a basic programme.

3. Avoid "energy-dense foods" and sugary drinks. That means cut way, way back on high-calorie fast food and soda.

All my books will help you here including recipes from “Recipe Book 1 & 2” I also explain in the books what other problems are caused by these foods like depression, hormonal imbalances and osteoporosis

4. Eat mostly plants. Shoot for five portions of non starchy fruits and vegetables each day. And french fries don't count. The starchy vegetables like potatoes and yams probably don't offer the same benefits as others such as greens, broccoli, okra, eggplants, and bok choy.

Again I have been encouraging people since 1991 to move in this direction and thousands of people have attained amazing health including many with cancer.

Follow the 5 steps in my books and you will reach this very comfortably. Taking in dark green leafy vegetables is essential and you can do with this by drinking a glass of sprouted barley grass or wheat grass juice daily. I prefer barley grass juice as it is the most nutritious of all the dark green leafy vegetables.

5. Back off on the red meat. Eat less than 500 grams (18 ounces) a week, and banish processed meats from your diet altogether.

One of the 5 steps in my books says you should not eat animal protein more than once a day, preferably not more than 3 times a week. Doing his will keep you within a safer range.

6. Limit alcohol. It's two drinks a day tops for men and one for women.

I explain in “Take Control” how alcohol is a top cause of breast cancer.

7. Avoid salty foods. Salts can cause stomach cancer, so be wary of highly processed salt-infused foods. Some processed foods that don't seem very salty—such as bread or cereal—can actually be loaded.

This is one of the main reasons I developed our organic salts as they contain a lot less salt than most seasoning and way more flavour. Order from orders@mary-anns.com

They come in 3 flavors

Herb – ideal for all foods and dishes from salads, vegetables, chicken and fish, casseroles, soups etc. This salt makes even a tired lettuce leaf come alive and taste delicious.

Garlic and Herb – for those of you who enjoy the favour of garlic with a subtle hint of herbs but don’t want to be overpowering your friends and family with garlic odour, this salt is for you. Ideal in any Mediterranean dish, essential when making humus, Mary-Ann’s chilli pesto and tasty on almost anything.

Seasoning salt – this is Mary-Ann’s secret ingredient for making any mushrooms taste like a gourmet meal. Try the marinated mushroom recipe in her recipe books and the broccoli and avocado salad or the garbanzo bean, cabbage and avocado salad with this. In fact any cruciferous vegetable tastes awesome with this salt as does spinach. Also great for a barbecue seasoning.

Order in neat 6 bottle pack

8. Don't pin your hopes on dietary supplements. High doses of nutrients can both protect against and promote cancer. But unless scientists can do a better job of sorting out which do which, your best bet will be to get the nutrients you need from foods.

For over 20 years I have been telling people this , yet we still want to believe we can buy health in a pill. Rather if you have a need to get extra nutrition in your body, invest in a juice extractor and make green, yellow and red juice daily. I take BarleyLife (Barley grass juice), Just Carrots (carrot juice) and Redibeets (Beet juice) in a dehydrated form. You can find out how to order this at the wholesale price from any of the Natural Health Consultants at www.mary-anns.com  or from info@mary-anns.com

9. Breast-feed your baby. Doing this for at least the first six months will help protect both the mother from breast cancer and the infant from obesity and other problems.

Healthy Kids will help you do this successfully

The panel made a 10th recommendation that probably goes without saying:

Cancer survivors should maintain this lifestyle, too. The full report is available at dietandcancerreport.org

There is more evidence than ever that a person who weighs too much is more likely to develop cancer, a landmark report said Wednesday.

And forget eating bacon, sausage and lunchmeat. No amount is considered completely safe, according to the analysis from the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund.

An international panel of experts reviewed more than 7,000 large-scale studies and spent five years developing the report (www.dietandcancerreport.org).

Excess body fat increases the risk of cancer of the colon, kidney, pancreas, esophagus and uterus as well as postmenopausal breast cancer, the report says.

READ THE REPORT: No amount of processed meat considered completely safe

"This was a much larger impact than even the researchers expected," says Karen Collins, a cancer institute nutrition adviser. "People forget body fat is not an inert glob that we are carrying around on the waistline and thighs. It's a metabolically active tissue that produces substances in the body that promote the development of cancer."

Michael Thun, head of epidemiological research for the American Cancer Society, says, "People are not paying nearly enough attention to the relationship between obesity and increased cancer risk." The report also found:

•Every 1.7 ounces of processed meat consumed a day increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 21%.

"This is a wake-up call for people who eat hot dogs or pepperoni pizza regularly," Collins says. "They need to be looking for other alternatives. But you can still occasionally have a hot dog."

There could be several reasons why processed meats may increase cancer risk. Carcinogens have been linked to smoked meat and the nitrates and excess salt in processed meats, Collins says.

•The evidence linking red meat intake (beef, pork and lamb) to colorectal cancer is more convincing than it was a decade ago, the report says. It advises limiting red meat to 18 ounces of cooked meat a week. The cancer risk is minimal for people who eat that amount, but beyond that the risk increases, Collins says.

•Alcohol consumption is linked to an increased risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, larynx, esophagus, breast, colon and liver.

The report is drawing fire from the food industry.

Aids Vaccine causes Aids

WASHINGTON, Nov 8 (Reuters) - AIDS vaccine researchers are worried about the future of their field after learning an experimental HIV vaccine not only does not work, but just might make recipients more susceptible to infection with the AIDS virus.

They are worried about their volunteers and the future of AIDS vaccines in general. And they are worried because they cannot understand how a vaccine would make a person more vulnerable.

Researchers from Merck & Co. (MRK.N: Quote, Profile, Research), which makes the vaccine, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which is helping develop it, said on Wednesday they believe a type of common cold virus used as the basis of the vaccine may somehow have made their volunteers more susceptible to HIV.

They are meeting this week in Seattle to hash through the data and figure out what happened.

This is what they know: Out of 1,500 people vaccinated, 82 became infected with the AIDS virus. Of these, 49 got the vaccine and 33 got a placebo shot.

While they are counselling volunteers that they may have raised their own risk of becoming infected, they are also trying to figure out what happened.

"The data are disappointing and puzzling but we don't have definitive answers," Dr. Lawrence Corey of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle, who was organizing the trial, told reporters.

Only one woman in the trial became infected with HIV. The rest were men having sex with other men, and it was the men who started out with the highest immune response to the adenovirus 5 common cold bug used to make the vaccine who were the most likely to become infected with the AIDS virus.

But the infected men were also less likely to have been circumcised -- circumcision can also prevent HIV infection -- and may have engaged in more risky behaviour. So did the vaccine actually do something, or were the results a fluke?

"I don't think we really do know," Dr. Keith Gottesdiener of Merck Research Laboratories told Reuters.

Atkins diet causes cancer

November 7, 2007 -- You might lose weight with the high-fat Atkins Diet of eggs, meat and cheese - but it could put you at risk of heart disease by raising your cholesterol and damaging your blood vessels, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of Maryland put 26 people on three diets - the high-fat Atkins and the low-fat South Beach and Ornish diets.

Eighteen people finished the study, which required each of them to follow one of the diets for a month. All along, doctors checked their cholesterol and the condition of their arteries.

The Atkins Diet raised the study subjects' bad cholesterol by an average of 16 points, and brought on symptoms of hardening of the arteries, a precursor to strokes or heart attacks.

The subjects had better lab tests on the other two diets. The Ornish Diet lowered their bad cholesterol by 25 points, while the South Beach Diet lowered it by 10 points. The conditions of their arteries also improved on both diets.

"It really is the Atkins Diet that is the worst," said Dr. Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

He was surprised by how quickly the Atkins Diet brought on signs of inflamed arteries, a heart-disease factor.

"Some markers of inflammation were increased by as much as 30 to 40 percent" by the Atkins Diet, Miller said. By contrast, the South Beach and Ornish diets either left the markers of inflamed arteries unchanged, or cut them by 15 to 20 percent.

Atkins Nutritionals - a Long Island company that markets the Atkins Diet - said Miller's study was too small to draw any conclusions.

"More than 30 years of industry research on low-carb diets and four years of studies specifically on the Atkins protocol have demonstrated its safety and efficacy," said Atkins spokeswoman Colette Heimowitz.

Also, Heimowitz said, those following the Atkins plan in Miller's study got about 50 percent of their calories from fat. Dieters who follow the Atkins regimen gradually reduce their fat intake to below 50 percent, she said.

Miller's study had a catch: Nobody was allowed to lose weight. If someone's weight varied by 2.2 pounds or more, their diet was adjusted to bring it back to where they began.

Weight loss improves people's health so much that it can hide the physical impact of what they eat, the study's authors explained. That's why they decided to find out how the diets affected people who did not lose weight.

Atkins dieters may eat as much fat-laden meat, eggs and cheese as they like, but curb their intake of fruits, vegetables and grains. As a result of their limited food choices, Atkins dieters lose weight because they eat fewer calories, researchers say.

But Miller said that most people find the low-carb Atkins Diet so hard to stick with, they soon gain back their weight.

And given that excess weight itself is a risk factor for heart disease, the Atkins plan could pack a double whammy on dieters' health, the study's authors said.

"We don't recommend the Atkins Diet," Miller said. "Why not start out with a diet that will be healthier for you in the long run after weight loss?"

The Ornish plan encourages users to eat a vegetarian diet, with 10 percent of calories from fat. The South Beach program allows a wider variety of foods and keeps fat to about 30 percent of calories. With Post Wire Services

Thought for the week

Then the LORD said to Moses, "I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.

Some thoughts from Beth Moore in her study “A women’s heart” by Lifeway

The Hebrew word translated 'test' is 'nacah' which means to 'try or prove'. Do you realise that not all of God’s tests are hardships? God often tests us through abundance and prosperity! This is one way He proves our character. Often, our character is at greater risk in prosperity than in adversity. You see, somewhere along the way we accept the lie that we had something to do with our provisions.”
