7 of 2007 Well back in Heathrow airport after a quick trip back to South Africa to sort out a few issues. One thing I am continually amazed at is how much abuse the human body can take. I am reminded of this every time I fly and see how much alcohol and processed foods people consume. But… I suppose a couple of cups of coffee or a cola or two and it somehow keeps you going. Mark and I never suffer from jet-lag anymore and it is fascinating to see how some people take 2 weeks to get over traveling across different time zones. The best rule of thumb for avoiding jet-lag is do not eat on planes and if possible try to avoid eating in airports unless it is fruit or freshly extracted fruit juices. The reason for this is simple. Even though it may be breakfast time back home, it is actually the early hours of the morning at your destination. You need to get your digestive tract in tune with your destination as soon as possible and the best time to do that is immediately you board the plane. The other reason is not to eat on planes is that your body is under huge strain flying at over 900km an hour in a pressurized cabin with air-conditioning and limited space. So give your body a break and just fast. I promise you will not die not eating and the results are just so worth it. Then, when you land make sure you spend as much time outdoors on that first day, yes even in overcast weather. At least go for a long walk and don’t wear any sunglasses. This is to help reset your pineal gland, which is what controls your day/night cycles. (plenty more on this in both “Take Control” and “Perfect Health” (USA only) and “The Natural Way”) Then the only thing we drink is water and BarelyLife (dried barley grass juice) and we travel with the sachets that are now available and drink 1-2 of these every few hours or whenever we feel the need for more than just water. On a typical 10 hour flight we will drink 2 sachets each when we depart and 1-2 when we wake up on the plane, then another 2 each when we land. To date we have avoided all the tummy bugs, respiratory infections and flu that do the roads on flights. It is one thing we always have on us. Mark and I will be attending the Aim convention in Florida and I am particularly interested this year as the people that formulated the energy drink “Peak Endurance” will be there to explain why it is such an amazing product. I have for years encouraged people to not drink the normal power and energy drinks on the market and rather drink grape-juice and this is covered in great detail in my book “Healthy Kids”. But when it comes to long distance training many people have found grape-juice, bananas and raisins not enough for the unnatural distances and times that they push their bodies. So, even many natural-health enthusiasts resort to drinking or eating unnatural substances. Warning: Soft Drinks May Seriously Harm You You may want to think twice before you sip another soft drink: research reported in the UK's Independent newspaper says a common preservative used in fizzy drinks can switch off essential parts of DNA. The preservative may bring on premature aging and trigger diseases associated with old age. The problem preservative is sodium benzoate, commonly used for many years by the $160 billion worldwide soft drink industry. Sodium benzoate, derived from benzoic acid, prevents mold in drinks like Coca-Cola, Oasis, Dr. Pepper, etc., and is also used in pickles and sauces. Alarm bells have already been ringing about it, because it's been discovered that when it's mixed with vitamin C in soft drinks, it creates the carcinogenic substance benzene. Now UK Professor Peter Piper of Sheffield University has sounded an even louder alarm — his experiments show that benzoate damages DNA in the energy-producing mitochondria of cells. "These chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it: they knock it out altogether," Piper said. "The mitochondria consumes the oxygen to give you energy and if you damage it — as happens in a number of diseased states — then the cell starts to malfunction very seriously. And there is a whole array of diseases that are now being tied to damage to this DNA—Parkinson's and quite a lot of neuro-degenerative diseases, but above all the whole process of ageing." The World Health Organization, the Food Standards Agency in the UK, and the US Food and Drug Administration all say that sodium benzoate is safe. Professor Piper, however, says that FDA tests are out of date. "The food industry will say these compounds have been tested and they are completely safe," Piper said. "By the criteria of modern safety testing, the safety tests were inadequate. Like all things, safety testing moves forward and you can conduct a much more rigorous safety test than you could 50 years ago." This is the same preservative found in all margarines and way back in 1991 I first mentioned that this preservative causes many problems including asthma and hyperactivity. Damaging the DNA was also mentioned back then and what is frightening is that in 16 years the food industry just ignores the research and continues to add this substances to many soft drinks consumed by children the world over. Unless the food or soda says preservative-free, it is not free of preservatives. Treat all processed foods and drinks with suspicion until otherwise proved I drink Ceres fruit juices when I travel as it is available in the UK and USA and of course South Africa where it is made. Margarine I avoid like the plague and always use extra virgin olive oil, Organic butter, virgin, coconut oil (Millbrook still makes the best in South Africa) and extra virgin oil blends like Millbrook superior blend.
Oranges May Fight Heart Disease Eating an orange every day could lower your risk of developing heart disease. A study at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem found that chemicals called flavanones found in oranges, grapefruits, and other citrus fruits could prevent heart attacks and protect against cardiovascular disease. Researchers found that flavanones reduced cholesterol levels by 20 to 25 percent in rats. In addition to reducing total cholesterol, they also reduced the levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol while raising the ratio of HDL (good) cholesterol. Grapefruit has long been known to have an effect on cholesterol levels. It is the reason that doctors warn patients who take cholesterol-lowering drugs not to eat the fruit because it can alter the way the liver functions and increase the effect of the drugs. Researchers suggested that people with high cholesterol try eating diets rich in citrus fruits before they resort to drugs such as statins to lower their cholesterol. Yet again those God-made foods are resulting in God-made health. Always remember there is no drug that does not have at least 1 if not many side effects. Flavones are what the wine industry has been going on about for years; forget the wine as the alchol promote cancer, stick to flavones in fruit and vegetables, they only promote health and prevent all degenerative disease. Follow the five steps in by books to help you increase your fruit and veg intake with very little effort.
Then for those of you who have heard that flax (seed and or oil) causes prostate, here is the latest on some genuine research. Just in case you are confused, the runour about flax causing prostate cancer was started by the fish oil peddlers and in research they quote from is referring to Omega 3 found in processed foods such as commercial salad dressings and mayonnaises and also in red meat. There is no mention of flax. Unfortunately people are prone to manipulate and twist the facts to suite their own commercial interests. It is sad but true.
