Detoxifying after the holidays

It's that time of the year again, when you swear you will never overindulge again as you struggle to recover from the post-holiday flu. Yup it's not a bug or a germ or bacteria, it is your body telling it to give it a break! And, if you are not feeling any negative effects yet from eating badly then do a 'detox' quickly before the symptoms arrive!

Here are a few programs that I find work, so choose what suits you and get back on track;

1. The 'meat and wheat free' easy version 
This involves eating no animal products at all for at least 1 week but 2 are better. I recommend you have a raw nut and fresh fruit smoothie for breakfast as the nuts stabilise your blood sugar and make you feel full. (See recipes below)
Snack on fruit all day long whenever you feel hungry and eat a large salad for lunch and supper followed by baked potato, gluten-free pasta, sweet potato, brown rice or any other natural carbohydrate  that is not wheat. For more details check out Option 2 in Chapter 4 of Perfect Health - The Natural Way.

It is best to just let your body guide you and eat as much as makes you feel satisfied.

2. The 'all raw' program 
This involves eating any raw fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts and seeds and dried fruit (preservative-free of course) at any time and as much as you like. The secret to coping with detox, is to not limit your intake and try to listen to your body. If hungry eat more, if not, eat less. 
Do the raw nut or seed smoothie at least once a day - breakfast is ideal as it stabilizes your blood sugar.
Check out the recipes in the 100 Days to Health Program if you have printed them out or in either Recipes Books 1 or 2.
This can be followed for life, but try to go for 7-14 days at least!

3. The 'mono' diet
Choose one kind of fresh fruit - grapes and apples are ideal and eat only that fruit for at least 3 days. You can then change to another fruit and eat that for another 3 days. Can be safely done for 2 weeks at least; again - listen to your body and eat as much as you like.

4. The juice detox
Drink freshly extracted fruit and vegetable juices at least 3 times a day for 1-7 days

5. The fast
Mark and I like to have a day of rest one day a week where we focus on only spiritual issues, drink only water and Barleylife and lie in the sun and or sleep. We watch no TV, discuss no business, family or financial issues. We did this for a month or two before December and then with visitors, everything changed and we found our day of rest filled with food and activity. So as of Sunday the 10th Jan we are back on track. Only this time we are doing a 3 day fast and 18 days of just fresh fruit. You cannot believe how this benefits you spiritually, mentally and physically. Recipes for detoxifying

Fruit and nut smoothie
1 handful or raw almonds or cashews (or combine) per person - order from www.naturalway.co.za in bulk at discount
half a pineapple per person
another handful of fresh or frozen berries or acid or sub acid fruit - see food combining chart (for better digestion)
freshly extracted apple or orange juice or any of the Ceres juices. 

Chili Pesto
handful fresh cilantro or coriander (dhania)
1 red bell pepper
2-5 chilis
1 tsp ground cumin
1-2 tsp Mary-Ann's Garlic & herb salt (order from http://www.naturalway.co.za)
half to 1 cup extra virgin olive oil (http://www.naturalway.co.za)
Combine well in a blender and serve on anything from salad, to veggies, sweet and straight potatoes, brown rice or rice cakes, corn, polenta etc
Delicious served on beans especially my homemade baked beans

Homemade baked beans
500g (1 pound) organic white kidney beans - the organic version is much tastier and sweeter (order from http://www.naturalway.co.za)
soak over night in clean water and rinse in morning
Place in pot on high and cover with water - bring to boil and then simmer until soft with lid on- at least 1 hour 

Add 2 tsp our vegetable stock powder or Garlic & Herb salt while cooking

Keep water just covering so you don't have to pour off

When soft and ready to eat add 4 cups tomato puree with 4 Tablespoons fructose, or raw honey or agave nectar

Adjust saltiness with our Garlic and herb salt and a dash of extra virgin olive oil, warm through and serve in a bowl after your raw veg or on top of anything!! This is simply the best baked beans. You can make them taste extra special by baking in a medium oven and then serving after adding tomato puree.

Lessons learned

Some lessons learned in 2009

1.The older you get the more grateful you are for healthy living. Getting older can suck, you need reading glasses, you have to eat less and exercise more and you skin does some strange stuff, but man how do you cope with drugs, aches and pains and while losing your mind.

Living healthy really starts to pay off as you get older, without a doubt it slows down the aging process radically and your head remains clear while your bowels keep working well with no drugs of any kind.

2. The older you get the less carbohydrates you need and food in general and the more exercise you need

3. It is cheaper to live a healthy life than live a normal life

4. I will only speak to people about their diet if they ask me, and that includes your kids.

5. You can raise your children healthily, but most  still need to experience health problems to really commit to the lifestyle (sadly) The good news is they will come round, just a few snotty nosed kids or a bout of bad flu and they are back on track!

6. You cannot control the weather, the economy or your grown up kids, - but you can control the way you respond to them

7. I cannot manage without knowing God intimately and He is my greatest source of comfort and satisfaction. Nothing satisfies like knowing God intimately.

8. You can eat really well and exercise, but chronic stress especially from families can make you go almost grey overnight!

9. Healthy women following a natural diet with little or no animal products in them and with exercise, sail through the menopause.

10. You can be happy anywhere as long as you make your mind up to be happy!!
