Rice Red 500g


Red rice is grown in Thailand. It is rich in flavor, almost nutty, and has a wonderful chewiness to it that long grained brown rice lacks, but similar to short grained brown rice.

We’ve tried it with several dishes and all were a success – with curried veg, sauteed mushrooms, with chickpeas or lentils, artichoke a  la king and sweetened with honey and cinnamon. To fully cook a cup of dry red rice, you’ll need 4-5 cups of water, soak for 30 minutes and then bring to the boil and simmer gently for 17 minutes, remove and let stand for 10 minutes before fluffing with a fork and serving.

From a nutrition perspective, red rice has 3 grams of fiber per serving (brown rice has 2 grams). But it has 10 times the antioxidants of brown rice! Red rice is also very rich in essential nutrients manganese (80% of your daily value) and molybdenum (35%).

Our Thai red rice contains 8g protein in 100g of rice, 4g iron, 3-4g calcium, 4g fibre, 3g fat and 70g carbohydrate

Ingredients: Red Cargo Rice

Cooking Method: 1 cup of Rice to 5 cups of clean water.

  • Combine and soak for half an hour
  • Cook on Moderate Heat till boiling (about 5 mins)
  • Turn to Low and allow to simmer until all the water is gone (about 17 mins)
  • Remove heat and allow to stand for 5-10 mins and the fluff with a fork and enjoy with your choice of condiment. Mary-Ann and I choose our Herb Salt with cubes of Avo. Delicious with Thai Curry as well. This is a vegan rice, don’t mess it up by dragging any dead animals into the picture!
